LG launches G2 smartphone, makes Samsung Galaxy S4 look old

The LG G2 smart phone is on display during a news conference, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 in New York.

NEW DELHI: LG on Wednesday announced G2, its new flagship Android phone. The device, which will be available gradually introduced in various markets worldwide in the coming months, will compete withSamsung Galaxy S4 as well as the upcomingSamsung Galaxy Note III and the nextiPhone.

The key feature of G2 is its placement of power and volume buttons. Unlike the traditional smartphones, G2 has these buttons under the main camera module on the back cover.

According to LG, the “rear key” concept was implemented because it found that users feel uncomfortable in reaching out to side buttons while using big phones. “Moving the main buttons to the back of the phone gives users more control since this place is where individuals’ index fingers are naturally (placed),” the company said in a press note.

To make sure that G2 has enough horsepower to stay in the market, LG has equipped it with top of the line hardware, which includes a 2.26 GHz quad-core processor. On paper this is even more powerful than the octa-core processor found in Galaxy S4 sold in India.

LG said that based on its research of consumer lifestyles and behaviors, G2 offers users more real-life benefits such as ergonomic design, practical functions and an intuitive user experience.

“Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers,” said Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications, “We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation. We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company’s history.”

According to LG, its new phone also uses dedicated graphics RAM, which should help it get better battery life compared to the phones sold by its competitors achieve.

Though LG has fallen behind in the smartphone race compared to its Korean neighbour Samsung, it is picking up the pace. Helped by its association with Google for the Nexus 4 phone, the company has managed to create a buzz around its smartphones again. Nexus 4, Optimus G Pro and Optimus G have done well in the market. LG is hoping that with G2 it can accelerate the recovery.
